Derek Wentzell began with NADF as the Microloan Coordinator in 2015, and currently holds the position of Community Economic Development Consultant for the Northern Ontario Development Program (NODP), with special focus on the Matawa Region and the Ring of Fire.
Tasked to support business and community growth, Derek has taken the lead role in developing and pioneering the innovative NADF Aboriginal Business Incubator. His responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Feasibility studies, research, business planning, partnership development, stakeholder engagement, business finance application support, policy development, facilitating community workshops, and everything in between.
Derek brings over 15 years of business development and management experience to NADF. He traveled the world as a professional chef managing kitchens across Canada and overseas; created and co-owned a successful high-end catering business while living in Banff, and helped run a student led microlending organization while attending university.
His passion lies in sustainable economic development, supporting entrepreneurs, as well as socially responsible finance & investing. When he is not at work, Derek lives for travel & adventure, new experiences, and meeting people.
In the spring of 2016, Derek was awarded the prestigious honour of being elected Valedictorian for his graduating class where he graduated with honours from the Master of Science in Management program from Lakehead University. Derek also holds an Honour’s Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Finance from Lakehead University, an Advanced Diploma in Personal & Corporate Finance from Algonquin College, in addition to his Diploma in Marketing from the same college.
