Awards Overview
In 1991, we held our 1st annual Business Awards Gala, to recognize two award recipients for their achievement in business: Business Man and Business Woman of the Year. Since then, the number of award categories has expanded to eight, with the most recent addition in 2010.
Traditionally awards have been presented to Aboriginal entrepreneurs, executives, businesses and organizations within the Nishnawbe Aski Nation territory. This territory spans the northern portion of Ontario, primarily the area known as Treaty #9, from the James Bay coast to the Manitoba border. Due to the vastness of the territory, the awards venue has alternated between Thunder Bay, ON and Timmins, ON to provide opportunity for participation from across the Nation.
As NADF has grown, our business awards has evolved to reflect the changes in our vibrant economy. In response to the growing activity of start-ups and newer businesses, we have expanded our capacity to offer services to them, and introduced a new award category this year to reflect this– the 'New Business of the Year Award'. This award recognizes excellence and/or outstanding business achievement by a Northern-Ontario based aboriginal business that is two years in existence or younger.
In 1993, the annual awards banquet also evolved into a fundraiser with event proceeds going to the Dennis Franklin Cromarty Memorial Fund in Thunder Bay, ON which provides bursaries to Aboriginal students advancing their education. The Fund was created in memory of the late Grand Chief and President of Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund, Dennis Franklin Cromarty, a visionary dedicated to achieving harmony amongst all peoples. His belief in Aboriginal people and what they could accomplish never swayed. This conviction to improve the quality of life, the advancement and recognition of Treaty, Aboriginal and Inherent Rights provided the vision for promoting self-government. He truly felt that there was no room for making excuses, just room to improve and to be dedicated to that improvement by 'working together'. We remain inspired by his example and work diligently to make Dennis' dream for his people become a reality.
Since the awards have been given – there has been 126 winners.
